When the sun comes out in Portland ...

... everyone heads outside.

Well, Portlanders are pretty intrepid outdoors-people in all weather, but when summer finally hits (usually toward the end of June) ... no one stays inside. Even, ahem, if they have work to do ...

{Who said that? Not me!}

Jim planted the seed of evil -- wanna go to the beach? -- this morning at breakfast, and it just sounded so good. "Beach" to us usually means the coast, but that's an hour-and-a-half drive, maybe two, and the chances were that lots of other people would have the same idea and clog the little coast road, plus which we'd get all the way there and it would be cold. Because it almost always is. So we decided to go to Sauvie Island instead.

Sauvie is this big farm island in the Columbia River just north of Portland. It's where we go berry-picking, but it also has beaches -- and, as you see above, a nice view of Mt St Helens over in Washington. We had never been to the beach there, but it seemed like a good idea, and it was!

It wasn't as spectacular as the coast, but it was warmer, and closer, and Clementine had a lot of fun and conked out in the car after practically as soon as we put her in her seat.

Yesterday being nice too, we indulged in another Portland good-weather activity, which was eating at a food cart pod. Portland is really big on food carts, and when there are a bunch clustered together, they're called a pod, which is pretty cute. They're all over the city.

This one is on SE Division and 33rd, and we really like it! It has pie!

(Here, a brown butter pecan "pie hole" with ice cream. GOOOOD.)

There's also: Venezuelan street food and non-dairy ice cream and pizza and Korean tacos (?) and -- this idea of sheer brilliance -- meals in waffle cones!! See:

(Can you tell that we don't have a single mirror set up in the house yet?)

One of those cones has pulled pork in it, the other chicken n dumplings. Genius! And good

Also, Brazilian food:

Mac n cheese:

And micro-brew! This green van was serving five different brews in mason jars.

We had sour pomegranate, which was realllly good!

They're called "Captured by Porches" which is a weird name for a brewery, but fun.

And I love their crow logo.

In summary, YAY! Summer has come to Oregon! YAY!

Now ... please don't let it get too hot ...

Just perfect! We've had a summer much like yours, the second wettest since 1900. Magnus has not even had a chance to use his little surfer suit and swimming diapers. And now we're headed up north to the cabin and the Atlantic ocean, which is freezing. Well. Maybe next year.

You know that episode of "Portlandia"... put a bird on it? (If not, you should.) The completely random bird on that brewery van made me laugh.
