White vs Color: Smackdown, Part I

There has been *some* perplexity about our decision to do white walls in the new house, which I totally understand. For years I would have felt the exact same way, like what a waste of color opportunity! But here's the thing. It's true what "they" say: white really is a great backdrop for color. Check out these rooms, pulled from my inspiration folder (and from various uncredited sources, sorry!). All have white walls, but none are lacking in the color department. Enjoy!

Some great rooms here, no?

I like white because it's so flexible--you can pretty much change the feel of the room whenever you want to. And white just feels peaceful to me...maybe I get enough color with all my kids' art projects hanging everywhere.

Yes, they are great! I particularly love that skinny floating bookshelf.

I think a lot of people mistake white walls for that more boring standard whitish-beigish-boringish color you see on many walls. What you are talking about is supreme ultimate white. Its going to look completely awesome and you have so much colorful art and tapestries and knickknacks everything will just pop out- like my tummy, only less so.

I'm still dreaming of your mom's lemon pie last night. Why why why WHY did I give you that last bite or two? I will regret it for the rest of my life.

Mmm! I want to EAT that nursery. I wish I had the restraint to do all white. I guess after living in off-white houses all my life, I've gone off the deep end with dusky browns and stormy violets. These gorgeous photos are convincing, though.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the room with the chandelier, mirrors and farm table! And the light blue shelf with the teeny-tiny dutch shoes-so sweet.

OH! And the stack of throw pillows under the table, and the comfy window seat with the beautiful mattress covers! I need to find my sewing machine...

love it! i prefer off-white, as i like the warmth that lends, but YES, i'm a big fan of adding color with furnishings, fabric and art. i need lots of light, and light colored walls, particularly white and off-white, help bounce the natural light around and make me feel like i'm outside. every room in my 710 sq ft house (except the 5'x6' bathroom) has two windows, and that was a major selling point. love your inspiration photos!

Thanks, until I stopped to take my eyes off the computer screen and realized I have been living for 28 years this month in a 95% off-white house, I was going to ask, won't a bright, white interior become dirty, dull, and perhaps depressing over time?

(Stop laughing! Most of my years here have been spent at work, so it's only taken 3 years of unemployment for me to FINALLY notice the white walls of my home this morning. It could happen to anyone.)

;-) Okay, now, what good colors inspire writing (for a male)? Artists like you and your husband should know. I'm listening, honest!

Stopping for a moment, to look around, can change your perspective, revealing another world. There is something special about coming here. Thanks for making me laugh at myself this morning.

Yes, veeery nice. You guys have so much cool, colourful stuff, I don't think your home could ever feel drab or sterile. It will look gorgeous.

Ah, the unattainable beauty depicted in interior design magazines! I'd say go for it, provided you're completely comfortable with the possibility that little Miss C's hand prints will make their way all over them. But I have a feeling you already know that, right?
