Why, what does YOUR toddler read?

So, Clementine likes Dragon Puncher. Don't know Dragon Puncher? It is a highly silly James Kochalka book from awesome Top Shelf Comics. It has dragon-punching in it, and a butterfly *might* get tocked by a wooden spoon, but it's pretty mild violence. It's graphic-novel format, and I wouldn't say Clementine always makes it to the end, but she does get pretty excited about the superhero kitty.

(Below, Clementine does not actually have a black eye. That is just Hipstamatic "atmosphere.")

Clementine's current favorite books would have to be:

1. As of today, a smash fave:

by Lisa Wheeler, illus. R. Gregory Christie

Jim picked this up today, and when I got home from writing, he and Clementine were on their fifth reading in a row. As soon as she spied the last page, she would demand, "Again!" This happened again at naptime, and again at bedtime, leading to a total of some twenty readings today! That's never happened before, though she does love the below too, with art by the same illustrator. Both are wonderful jazzy read-alouds.

by Muriel Harris Weinstein, illus. R. Gregory Christie

Her other current faves are any and all of Jane Yolen and Mark Teague's
dinosaur books, of which these are a few:

And all of David Shannon's No David books:

Totally great.

What are your kids reading?

Everything - whatever has print on it - the other day the Pixie was investigating Emily Dickinson's poems while I was in the toilet - at least he held the book upright!

But favs are Alison Jay's Christmas time and anything by Leslie Patricilli - brilliant

Oh, cool!

I feel really bad about Magnus's reading these days. We were off to a good start, and when he was eight months, he adored The Gruffalo. I think he likes the rhythm of it. But now he only wants books with flaps that he can open - and tear off. After that they're no good. Which leads to less reading. Must get a grip! Curious George on the telly is fun, but no substitute for *reading*.

I think I'll send Clementine's list to assorted benevolent aunts and grandmothers and hope that something appears in the mailbox.

my kids loved the "How Do Dinosaurs" books AND definitely No David -- HUGE hit...

nowadays, it's the I Spy and The Magic Treehouse series...and anything about horses.

The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson (? - same as The Gruffalo) is a wonderful book...also well-loved...

Love David Shannon's books. Right now, my 2 year old grandson never tires of Scott Fischer's "JUMP!".

We, of course, love Goodnight Moon, but the girls' fav's are The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child, The Witch and the Broom ("The Witch tapped the broomstick and, 'whoosh' they were gone.")all by Julia Donaldson.
Bob Hartman's "Cheer Up Chicken" and "Dinosaurumpus"
Too many good ones!

My 3 year old loves books (my 4m old does too). Fancy Nancy, the Usborne 'That's Not My ...' series, ANYTHING by Mo Willems, Little Critter, Dr. Seuss, Karen Katz, Sandra Boynton, How Do Dinosaurs..., National Geographic Little Kids Magazine, Curious George and so much more. We love to read.

I read the title "Dragon Puncher" and snorted Diet Coke out of my nose... which hurts. But that is awesome! A superhero cat punching dragons?!?

My two year old "reads" his favorites over and over to me now. Mo Willems books are a standard here, as are the Yolen/Teague dinosaur books. My tot's fave of the dino books right now is How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms? He now likes to make his bed "quite tidy".

My 3 1/2 year old loves Mo Willems (especially TODAY I WILL FLY and KNUFFLEBUNNY) and the LLAMA LLAMA books. My 2 year old is all about WE'RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT--has loved it since she was 6 months old. These days, she tries to take any hardback book that I am reading and claim it as her own. FLY ON THE WALL and ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS have been recent "reads."

They (my 4-yr-old twins) love Chris Van Dusen's If I Built A Car. Me too.
