Norway Trip part I: Bergen

We're back from Norway!! We had a wonderful time. It's such a beautiful country! Here are some pics from our first stop, Bergen, on the southwest coast. The harbor is famous for its old wooden houses, and the landscape around it is riddled with fjords. We didn't go to any of the big ones, but just Osterfjord, which is a short loop trip by boat from the Bergen harbor.

One of the loveliest places, a short trip from Bergen, is Lysoen, the villa of 19th-Century violinist Ole Bull. To get there you take a tram, a bus, and a boat.

On approach:

The view from the house, our first taste of the islandy coastline of Norway. Zoom in on the Norwegian coast on a map. It's crazy. There are over 50,000 islands, and I don't know how many fjords and inlets. It's WILD.

Trails around the house for hiking:

The inside, some kinds fancy. The style is traditional Norwegian with a bit of Russian fairy tale flair.

Another effort:

 Some pics around town:

Clementine on the fjord boat writing an epic He-Man book:

More later on the rest of the trip!

Lainey, your pics are killing me! We're going to Oslo and &tc. (undecided as of yet) next September, and it looks fabulous. Also reminds me a great deal of Iceland -- you should go there sometime - it's just a quick hop from Seattle and it's wonderful. Friendly people, Bjork-esque fashions, great graffiti. Also, HOT SPRINGS. Best part. ;)

It's been so fun following your trip, Laini! I'm so glad you, Jim, and Clementine had such a great time. I'm curious, what camera do you use? XO

Hi Tanita! Ooh, you're going to Norway? Oslo's a great city, but the real drama is beyond. So many places within an hour flight! Wish we'd seen more. I'd like to go to the Lofoten Islands one of these days. As for Iceland, funny: I just found out that there's a new Portland-Reykjavic direct flight. That would make for an interesting week away :-)

Hi Laurence! I use a Nikon D7000 but have more or less given up on really USING it for now. I have a bag of fun lenses and stuff but don't even bring them anymore, and just set the thing on fully auto :-(. Some day I'd like to have a really immersive photography trip and try more stuff.

Laini. Thank you posting your beautiful photos of your trip to Norway. My grandfather was born and lived outside of Oslo. It has always been my dream to travel to Norway and Sweden, where my grandmother was born. Sue told me to check out the fantastic trip you, Jim and Clementine had the experience and memories for a lifetime.
