HURRAY!!!!!!
Hi all! I only just realized that I never shared this highly thrilling news on my blog, only on Twitter and Facebook, though I'd been dying to tell you for months.
Joe Roth is producing the Daughter of Smoke & Bone movie!
I am excited beyond belief by this. Here is someone who knows how to make a big fantasy movie, and I really could not be happier, moving forward. Yay yay yay!!!!!!
There are other exciting things going on in the process, which I will happily share as soon as they are settled and I am allowed. For now I'll just say that I am massively excited as this film takes another step closer to becoming a reality.

YES! I loved Alice in Wonderland...it was just so beautiful! And now the same producer is going to be making Daughter of Smoke and Bone and YES!

So very excited!!! Back when the announcement came out my friend Melissa & I were emailing back and forth about it. We especially laughed about the "awful father" deadline used to describe brimstone.

ReplyDeleteDo you need a personal assistant to help you? I am an expert horn polisher, marionette therapist and masseuse, angel feather detangler (what DO they use to shampoo and condition their feathers?! the smokeless fire probably kills any pesky "bird wing lovin" nits, but they couldn't use macadamia or argan oils right?), I make a mean paprikash and goulash (vegetarian though, side of stardust, no poison), I potentially may be able to translate the magical language of Bornean primates, but they demand unreasonable amounts of chocolate, I will invite you to drink wine (literally under the table. aren't homemade caves the best!), etc. etc. I'm qualified I tell you! And I accept payment in the form of smiles.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Laini! I'm a writer at heart, it's what I've wanted to do since I was a child. It's just that when I sit down to write, more often than not, it feels as though I'm standing on the wasteland of an destroyed beach where a massive tide has washed ashore and brought with it kitchen sinks, rotting and eviscerated animal carcasses, the sun-bleached bones of giant sea creatures, unexploded World War II bombs, the remnants of an oil spill....
ReplyDeleteI wish I could just grab the edge of the waterline and flip it outwards, back to sea, like flipping a comforter, and let it take all the clutter, and fear and self-doubt with it. I just know there are villages and haunted wrecks and tunnels that lead to other worlds and points in time under all the junk.

Tiffany Marie, I'd love to respond to that at more length, regarding writing and mental blocks in general, when I can get my thoughts together. Would you mind if I quote what you said above in a blog post? It's really very beautiful, and I know so many people will be able to relate to it :-)

I know that myself, and all of your readers, are deeply looking forward to your writing advice.
Speaking of head-case... Approx. 2 years ago, I began to feel that my different way of thinking was no longer the best way to exist. I didn't really fit in with most of the people living in the stagnant suburban primordial pool around me. So, I headed to a psychiatrist for the first time and he diagnosed me with Adult ADD. He started me on nonstimulant ADD meds. At first, I thought this must be how life is supposed to be. I began cleaning for 2-3 straight hours everyday, just simply hyperfocusing on the most mundane tasks. Slowly my creativity, ideas, and imagined worlds began slipping away. I began to get really sick with fever, pain throughout my body, high blood pressure, etc. Apparently my body had a response to the meds and I truly believe it was telling me to get off the Zombie Candy. Daydreaming is OK, losing outward focus for a little while as you slip into world building is OK, preferring your characters to some of the people you meet in everyday life is OK. What would art be without the ticks and quirks that make us all so uniquely human, and maybe just a little mental?
I understand that sometimes meds are necessary, it just wasn't right for me and I'm so happy to have my weird, wacky world back.
So yes, I love that and feel total solidarity! ::head-case fist bump in HD with fireworks, cannons and water salute:: :)
I think it would be a great idea for it o on the screen cause it really is an amazing book, but I think it would last longer and gain more viewers if it was a tv series. just think about it.

Is everyone just going to ignore the fact that the picture says "her father sends her out on errands"? BRIMSTONE IS NOT HER DAD. He's her father figure and the closest thing she has, but he. Is. Not. Her. Dad.

ReplyDeleteHi, I'm only 16 years old, but I have a deep and passionate love for Zuzana. As Shakespeare once said, "though she be but little, she is fierce". My friend recommended me your books (which by the way are some of my all-time favourites, your use of prose is unparalleled in modern fiction, especially in young adult fiction) because the character reminded her of me. I am an aspiring actress, and I know that you will probably get comments like this by the thousands, but I'd love it if you could post the details of when you will be auditioning for Zuze. I gathered that the audition is going to be in America, but I would be happy to send in an online audition, even if it would disadvantage me. ReplyDeleteI am so happy for you. I love to act my self so I would love to play Karou she may be the main character but I love her she is amazing. This would be my chance, all my life I have been preparing myself to act and preforming as my favorite character in my favorite book by my favorite and the best author. You really deserve this all of your books are amazing I hope you can respond to this I would love it if you responded back you are amazing.
